A physiatrist, also called a Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist, is a Medical Physician specializing in disability of various forms. The field encompasses various disciplines, including; pain management, stroke and other neurological disorders, low back pain, neck pain, amputation for prosthetic design, NCV/EMG studies, traumatic brain injury, arthritis, spasticity management, etc.

A physiatrist works to obtain optimal function in patients, despite residual disability, even if the impairment is caused by a pathological process that cannot be reversed.
