General Surgery
A general surgeon is a specialist prepared to manage a broad spectrum
of surgical conditions affecting almost any area of the body. The surgeon
establishes the diagnosis and provides the preoperative, operative and
postoperative care to surgical patients and is usually responsible for
the comprehensive management of the trauma victim and the critically ill.
During at least a five year educational period after obtaining a medical
degree, the surgeon has acquired knowledge and technical skills in problems
relating the head and neck, breast, abdomen, extremities, and the gastrointestinal,
vascular and endocrine systems. The surgeon uses a variety of diagnostic
techniques, including endoscopy, for observing internal structures, and
may use specialized instruments during operative procedures. A general
surgeon is expected to be familiar with the salient features of other
surgical specialties in order to recognize problems in those areas and
to know when to refer a patient to another specialist. Other areas of
special expertise are recognized within the discipline of general surgery,
requiring additional training and further examination. Our surgeons are
fully trained and experienced in laparoscopic surgery.

Thoracic Surgery
Thoracic surgery encompasses the operative, peri-operative care, and critical
care of patients with pathologic conditions within the chest. Included
is the surgical care of coronary artery disease, cancer of the lung, esophagus
and chest wall, abnormalities of the great vessels and heart valves, congenital
anomalies and tumors of the mediastinum. The management of the airway
and injuries to the chest is within the scope of the specialty. Thoracic
surgeons have the knowledge, experience and technical skills to diagnose
accurately, to operate upon safely and to effectively manage patients
with intrathoracic maladies. This requires substantial knowledge of cardiorespiratory
physiology and oncology, as well as capability in the use of extracorporeal
circulation, intra-aortic balloon support, pacemakers, pleural drainage,
respiratory support systems, endoscopy, and invasive and non-invasive
diagnostic techniques.
